HINTS AND TIPS : SEO - HOW SPECIFIC DO YOU NEED TO BE?

The hot topic of the moment is SEO. With recent changes to the way Google ranks sites the issue has become a minefield for many website owners as their sites drop down the listings even though they have made no changes.

The fact that there have been no changes may, in fact, be the reason the site has dropped as all search engines like to see activity; the more recent a posting the more likely they will pick it up and display it in the listings.

But it is still important to ensure that every page on your website includes relevant keywords, the words searchers use to find sites which can supply the answers to their questions or the products they want to buy. The problem is that all too often site owners don't know which are the best keywords to use.

In steps Google Adwords with the answers. Their Keyword site (https://adwords.google.co.uk/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none) will give you a long list of phrases that people use to find information on your type of business. These are the ones you need to have liberally scattered throughout your website pages.

For instance, type in the words ‘web design' and what do you get?

Surprisingly perhaps, the most popular search phrases are ‘what is web design' and ‘design web'; ‘website design' comes third in the list. Each of those phrases has an average of more than 1m local searches per month.

Next on the list, with only half the number of enquirers each month, come web designer and website designer; not to be confused with the plurals of both and the variations ‘web site design', web design site' and site design web'. The last three bring in around a quarter of a million local searches per month.

This site will also show you the number of global searches per month which can show up some interesting differences. However, unless you are supplying a truly global service it is better to concentrate on the local search results and put them into effect.
